Design and AI — A Theatre Play
by Ana Duarte
AI & Design Overview
Everything is design, and now, everything is AI. Just ask ChatGPT, one of the biggest and most used AI tools of the moment.
The connection between AI and design is a fascinating and rapidly evolving field with the potential to transform various industries. But when did it all start?
AI’s use in design can be traced back to the 1960s and 1970s when computer programs were developed to generate simple graphics and layouts. Early applications included algorithmic art and computer-aided design (CAD) systems, which helped automate the drafting and modeling processes in architecture and engineering.
Fast forward 50+ years, and we now have AI-driven design tools capable of automating repetitive design tasks. For example, Adobe’s Sensei employs AI to help designers automate image editing, manipulation, logo creation, layout design, and even copywriting. AI-powered design tools can also assist with tasks like logo creation, layout design, and even copywriting.
Challenges and Future Directions
As questions about AI and design multiply, one topic that piques greater curiosity is the future.
AI and design will continue to intertwine, some key considerations for the future include:
- Ethical AI: addressing biases, and ensuring privacy in AI-powered design tools.
- Human-AI collaboration: exploring the evolving roles of designers in AI-enhanced processes.
- AI-Generated Art: Examining the implications of AI-generated content on the creative industries.
- Education and training: preparing the next generation of designers to work effectively with AI tools.
- Cross-Industry applications: discovering AI’s impact beyond traditional design fields.
- AI-Enhanced creativity: reimagining the synergy between AI and human creativity.
Who, When and Where
So, how do you design for AI?
That’s what we aim to explore in a night at the Teatro Municipal de Matosinhos Constantino Nery for the matosinhos.tech 12th event, AI & Design, and discover how design influences AI technologies.
Learn about the latest advancements in AI from the following speakers (more details below):
- Kota Kobayashi: Design Leadership / Product Design Principal @ Wize
- Alexis Roche: Head of AI @ Didimo
- Rodrigo Moura: Director of Engineering @ Viz.ai
Join us at the theatre for a captivating tech show! Additionally, enjoy live music, indulge in delicious food prepared by Mafaldas, and be part of our friendly community.
Timetable
- Doors open at 17:30.
- The show starts at 19:00 and finishes at 20:00.

- You can get your ticket here.
Also, matosinhos.tech will donate the money from the ticket sale to a charity. This way, your presence not only allows you to attend this event, but also contributes to the community by supporting Casa do Caminho with the proceeds from ticket sales.
Speakers
Kota Kobayashi
Bio: Kota leads the design practice at Wise in London. Before moving to London, he lived and worked in New York City, gaining a wealth of design experiences. He works at the intersection of brand, product, and technology, aiming to deliver useful and delightful experiences to all the products he touches.
Presentation: Kota will take us on a journey to explore the question, “What is good design?” and share how this inquiry transformed his perspective, guiding his career and defining his essence as a designer.
Alexis Roche
Bio: Alexis Roche currently leads the Artificial Intelligence team at Didimo Inc. He’s a graduate engineer from Ecole Centrale Paris, with a PhD earned at INRIA Sophia Antipolis, France. With over 20 years of post-doctoral experience in research and development in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence, his career has taken him through several prestigious technology institutes in Europe, including the University of Oxford (UK), CEA Saclay (France), ETH Zurich, EPF Lausanne, and Siemens Healthineers (Switzerland) before joining Didimo in 2019.
Presentation: Alexis will explain how AI can automate a pipeline for the technical aspects of creating digital humans from standard photos, covering everything from low-level image processing to facial 3D shape and texture reconstruction.
Rodrigo Moura
Bio: With over 17 years of experience in software engineering, Rodrigo is passionate about creating products that address real-world challenges and have a positive impact on people’s lives.
Presentation: Rodrigo will discuss how to design a platform that provides real-time information, expediting the process of diagnosing medical conditions.
